Meet Andrew VanGansen

Originally from the San Fernando Valley and now residing in Arizona, Drew brings style and calm vibes to the Dyno Creative team. His love for music, art, and immersing himself in new learning experiences every day is a key source of inspiration for our team and our clients.

His easy-going personality, open-mindedness, and insane talent not only allowed him to earn a BFA in Illustration from the Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD), but these traits also helped him establish long-lasting personal and professional relationships that eventually played a critical role in shaping his career.

Professional Background

Going into college, Drew was still up in the air deciding between pursuing fine art and illustration, or just going all in on illustration. The counselors at LCAD came in clutch, explaining the difference between the two options, breaking down course schedules, future job prospects, and everything in between. After his first portfolio review, Drew had the clarity he was looking for—illustration was the way to go.

As a visual person, it was important for Drew to not only find the program that was right for him, but to attend a school that inspired him to get out, explore, and connect with the world around him. After touring a few schools, including one in Canada, he realized LCAD was the perfect fit. Even though he initially hoped for an out-of-state college experience, LCAD was a good enough distance from home that he had his own space to develop and grow as an artist, while still being close enough to visit family.

Drew met Daniel Adoff while attending LCAD, which led to an internship and eventual full-time position with Dyno Creative. His time with Dyno Creative has served as an overall foundation for developing his illustration and communication skills as a professional illustrator.

Working within a team structure has proven to be more enjoyable to Drew than working in a silo. It’s made it easier to ask for input, collaborate on projects, and cultivate new relationships. “I’m super grateful for this experience because it has culminated in a network of amazing people while harnessing my skills in different specialities.”

Current Role at Dyno Creative

As the Senior Creative Illustrator, Drew’s day-to-day mostly involves staying on top of continuing projects. From updating graphics and marketing materials for current clients to creating visual assets for Dyno Creative’s social media and e-commerce store, Drew also spends a significant amount of time developing brand guidelines to ensure visual cohesiveness for companies big and small.

When it comes to illustrating for new clients, branding always comes first. A company’s brand is the trunk of the tree, and the illustration is the branches and leaves that stem from the tree. At its foundation, Drew explores how he can help brands become visually stronger while staying true to their vision. Logos, word marks, shape languages—all of these details lay the groundwork for a consistent and cohesive visual brand identity.

Favorite Dyno Creative Projects

Mythic Gourmet has been a great project to work on! Casey has gotten a lot of traffic for personalized dinner requests. The latest event we prepped for was a feast of two queens. Initially, he gave us a prompt to lean into as far as the look and feel went— Mythic Gourmet, but push it towards a more rustic and medieval feel. One of the cool things about this project is that it’s strictly mythic gourmet, and we didn’t have to worry about other influences competing against our vision. Another interesting project was our Minecraft project for Cold Open. During my senior year, I had a roommate who introduced me to Minecraft. He taught me the ropes and we ended up getting a server of five friends to join in on it. It was a great time. We got to communicate through the game even though we lived far away from one another. This project reminded me of that time in school—it felt very nostalgic.

Why Choose Dyno Creative?

Q: Why do you like working at Dyno Creative?

A: “Dyno allows me to get into pop culture. I grew up drawing Marvel characters, but  I never really looked behind the curtain at how the industry works until I started working for Dyno. I talk to Austin about movies and video games all the time, which is fun. We have strong connecting points, especially the impact art has had on us and the creative choices we make in our careers.”

Q: Why should people hire Dyno Creative?

A: From working with the Dyno team, I see the passion we all have in our individual fields and the hours we put into the work. Strategy development meetings and hours-long discussions going over the small details just go to show we really care about what we do. Even though they are paid projects, they really feel like passion projects. Our clients trust us with their brand, and I appreciate how much we dive into the concept. It’s an even bigger plus when we come out on the other end with something they are proud of.”
