In collaboration with Mattson Creative, we illustrated a Star Wars puzzle for Theory11, expanding their premium product line from playing cards into collectible puzzle experiences.
Puzzles play by different rules than traditional illustration. Large areas of flat color create frustrating dead zones for solvers, but too much detail makes things chaotic and hard to read. Every decision needed to balance visual integrity with puzzle functionality: dense enough to stay engaging, clear enough to read at a glance, and cohesive enough to feel collectible.
Our goal was to create an illustration that functions as both a display-worthy collectible and an engaging puzzle-solving experience for Theory11’s premium product line.

The core concept: capture the Star Wars metatrilogy within a contained, “windowed” composition, bringing together the full main cast alongside iconic locations and vehicles. Rather than isolating moments, we built a unified scene where characters, environments, and props all share one visual system. Light and dark elements create natural structure, and familiar landmarks (Cloud City, Hoth, the Millennium Falcon) reward fans as they progress through the solve.
The framing and typography draw from Theory11’s existing Star Wars playing card deck, keeping the product line connected while letting the puzzle expand into something more immersive. Internally, the composition balances symmetry, distributed focal points, layered depth, and controlled density so no area becomes too difficult or too empty. Every region was designed with the solver in mind: no flat, uninterrupted color, subtle variation between puzzle regions, and recognizable elements spread across the full board.
The composition evolved through multiple iterations. The top-center focal point alone went through four variations: Luke and Anakin, Anakin and Vader, Palpatine alone, then the final grouping of Anakin, Palpatine, and Obi-Wan. Key characters shifted positions throughout, each adjustment driven by narrative clarity, visual hierarchy, and puzzle functionality.
Sketches started intentionally sparse, focused on structure over detail. As the composition developed, layers were added carefully to build richness without losing clarity. Collaboration with Mattson Creative was central to refining the overall vision.
